On Tuesday, 9 July 2013, the Minister of Diaspora of Azerbaijan, Mr Nazim Ibrahimov, his wife, Mrs Minaya Ibrahimova, and their children Elnur and Kamala, visited the “Marianna V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA” Paediatric Oncology Hospital, where they were welcomed by the President of the Association of Friends of Children with Cancer “ELPIDA” and the Director of the “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital, Mr Emmanouil Papasavvas.
The purpose of the visit of the Azeri Minister was to witness the work of the ELPIDA Association up close, and to co-sign with the President of the Association, Mrs Marianna V. Vardinoyannis, a Memorandum of Understanding between the ELPIDA Association and the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, an international center based in Ganja, Azerbaijan, of which Mr Ibrahimov is a board member.
According to the Memorandum, the two institutions will cooperate in cultural and scientific areas, aiming to create a world where children can grow in a healthier and more peaceful environment.
This cooperation falls under the Twinning Programme with paediatric hospitals of the world, which was launched in early 2013 by the ELPIDA Association, since, through the two foundations, it will advance scientific dialogue and the exchange of knowledge on treating childhood cancel and thalassemia between the “Marianna V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA” Paediatric Oncology Hospital and the Thalassemia Center in Baku.
“Your presence in our Hospital”, Mrs Vardinoyannis noted as she welcomed the guests, “is a great honour for us, since it expresses your awareness and interest in the children fighting a hard battle against cancer… I feel deeply moved that Azerbaijan, a country with a long history and a much promising future, has forged close ties of friendship with Greece throughout the centuries, and today with the kind support of the Minister, Mr Nazim Ibrahimov, we are creating a new path to jointly advance towards a world that will ensure better living conditions for children… The First Lady of Azerbaijan, Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva, has visited our guest house in the past and gave gifts to the children and encouragement to their parents, and we have discussed the cooperation prospects between our Association and the Thalassemia Center, in which she is President, since this scientific center, as you know, is exclusively focused on the treatment of thalassemia… Our goal is to give the scientific staff of our Hospital the opportunity to work with an acclaimed scientific center abroad, in order to create an international scientific network, through which research for childhood cancer will advance and will ultimately defeat it…”.
After that, Mrs Vardinoyannis, invited Mr Ibrahimov to place the Azerbaijan flag on the map and awarded him the special honorary plaque of the ELPIDA Association, as a recognition of his contribution for the work of ELPIDA.
Mr Ibrahimov sincerely thanked Mrs Vardinoyannis for the honour she bestowed on him and expressed his admiration for her work and her personality: “It is very moving to see how Mrs Marianna Vardinoyannis handles all these matters with love for the children and I believe that successful people know that caring for children, is caring care for the future of humanity. As a politician, I meet many politicians and prominent figures, but having become acquainted with Mrs. Vardinoyannis, I hold her in higher regard than those people. I am sincerely impressed, and I would like to personally thank Mrs Marianna, also on behalf of my family, for the great work she is doing and I feel honoured to have the privilege to personally meet such a person. I would like to thank you for this invitation enabling us to see and understand these matters. We are happy for this collaboration between Mrs Marianna and the First Lady of Azerbaijan. And as a parent I am happy that my daughter appears to be impressed with the purposes of ELPIDA.”
This collaboration aims at the twinning of the Oncology Hospital with the Thalassemia Center, that is supported by the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and the First Lady of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, and will give yet another resounding message of collaboration between the two people.
