A document confirming the “twinning” of the ELPIDA Association and the Aghia Sofia Children’s Hospital with the Iashvili Children’s Central Hospital and the Solidarity Fund of Georgia was signed this morning, 14 July 2016.
The President of the Friends of Children Association with Cancer-ELPIDA, Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis and the Director of the Aghia Sofia hospital, Mr. Manolis Papasavvas, welcomed the Ambassador of Georgia to Greece, Mr. Ioseb Nanobashvili, Dr. Mariam Jashi, who represented the Solidarity Fund of Georgia and Prof. Ivane Chkhaidze who represented the Iashvili Children’s Central Hospital to the Pediatric Oncology Unit.
“We welcome you as friends of ELPIDA and new partners in our work,” Mrs Vardinoyannis said. “I am deeply touched because today brings to reality the vision we shared with the Honourable Ambassador of Georgia to Greece, Mr. Ioseb Nanobashvili, who believed in our project and supported with great enthusiasm from his very first visit.
“Thanks to his tireless efforts, Georgia will participate in our Association’s Twinning Programme. With the signing of the agreement today we are building a new bridge of friendship and solidarity between Georgia and Greece. The purpose of the programme is to hasten the day when no child will have to leave the country to be saved and will be able to pass the difficult period of treatment with close family and friends. We believe that technology and science can remove the borders between countries and we have to use thisto our advantage to win the fight against cancer.
“While uniting our forces against childhood cancer we can create a platform for peace, dialogue and solidarity among peoples. Here today, placing the flag of Georgia, along with the flags of the countries which have joined the “Twinning Program” -Canada, Cyprus, USA, Netherlands, Turkey, Israel, Azerbaijan, Serbia and Egypt – we feel a great honor and pleasure, in symbolically sealing our friendship and our cooperation.”
The Georgia Ambassador to Greece, Mr. Ioseb Nanobashvili, thanked Mrs. Vardinoyannis for her warm welcome and kind words. “Mrs Vardinoyannis’ special gift is being present when and where she is needed. The people who work here save lives. There is nothing more important than that. The association founded by Marianna Vardinoyannis has been saving lives for 25 years and recently celebrated this important anniversary.
“Mrs Vardinoyannis I take this opportunity to thank you again for your amazing achievement and thank you for your tireless efforts! Today the two institutions joining forces for good of society. I wish success to both sides and success means more lives saved. The most important is to give hope. Also, as mentioned by Mrs Vardinoyannis, this cooperation creates bridges between the two peoples, and I am convinced that this cooperation will assist in the twinning between the republics of Greece and Georgia.”
Dr. Mariam Jashi added her wishes for the success of the twinning agreement and announced the decision of the Medical State University of Tyflidas’ Academic Council, signed by the Rector, to offer Mrs Vardinoyannis an honorary doctorate for the work done internationally and her assistance to the children.
Receiving the honorary diploma, Mrs Vardinoyannis said: “This is an unexpected honour and I thank you very much. I think it is our duty to do everything for the children and this degree gives me even more strength and courage to continue my efforts.”
For their contribution to ELPIDA’s work Dr. Mariam Jashi and Prof. Ivane Chkhaidze were awarded the Association’s honorary plaque, and the Georgian ambassador received an ELPIDA statuette to commemorate the important day.
Both delegations exchanged gifts.
