With the signing of a Sisterhood Agreement with the Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital of the Chaim Sheba Medical Center – one of the largest hospitals in Israel – the Marianna V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA Children’s Cancer Unit today gains yet another ally in the great fight against childhood cancer.
On Tuesday, 3 July 2018, the President of the ELPIDA Association of Friends of Children with Cancer, Marianna V. Vardinoyannis, together with the Governor of the Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital, Manolis Papasavvas, welcomed representatives of the Chaim Sheba Medical Center to the Children’s Oncology Unit, signing a Sisterhood Agreement and giving hope to hundreds of children in Greece and Israel.
The Israeli Ambassador to Greece, Irit Ben Abba, was present for the signing of this important agreement.
The Sisterhood Agreement signed between the two hospitals provides for reciprocal training of medical and nursing staff, creation of treatment protocols in cases where this is deemed necessary, and joint research programs and conferences.
“This is a great day for us because we are gaining yet another ally in the fight against childhood cancer. And this is very important, because we have not stopped fighting for the children since the day we started, 28 years ago, believing that the life of even a single child is worth fighting for. I hope this agreement enables us to support all of the children mounting their own fight in Greece and Israel,” Mrs. Vardinoyannis said following the signing of the agreement.
Welcoming the signing of the agreement, Israeli Ambassador Irit Ben Abba stressed that “what we want to do is help children. We launched this effort four years ago, and it is finally becoming a reality. This is a wonderful collaboration between the two sides. Many thanks to Marianna V. Vardinoyannis for her contribution.”
The Chaim Sheba Medical Center’s Director for International Relations, Michal Raviv Reisman, emphasised the importance of sharing knowledge and experience in the fight against childhood cancer. “Medicine is a global language. And we all have to share our knowledge to ensure the health of all the children in the world,” she stressed.
Professor Amos Toren, the head of the Children’s Oncology Unit at the Chaim Sheba Medical Center, talked about the importance of signing such an agreement with a Unit with the very high standards of the Marianna V. Vardinoyannis – ELPIDA Children’s Oncology Unit. “The Marianna V. Vardinoyannis – ELPIDA Children’s Oncology Unit is a model in the fight against childhood cancer. I hope that, at some point, we get a similar, autonomous unit,” he said.
In the context of the Sisterhood Program of the Marianna V. Vardinoyannis – ELPIDA Children’s Oncology Unit, Cooperation Agreements have already been signed with the largest hospitals in the world in order to create a cooperation platform in the fight against childhood cancer.
