On the occasion of the World Day for the Children’s Cancer which is honored on February 15th every year, the Association “ELPIDA
Association of friends of Children with Cancer” and the Children’s Oncologic Hospital “Marianna V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA” are reporting the most recent scientific data for the handling of the disease in our country.
Every year 300-400 children are diagnosed with cancer in Greece. The 80% percentage of them is hospitalized at the Children’s Oncologic Hospital “Marianna V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA” where, 3-4 children are fully healed.
As of the year 2010 until to date, 51.000 hospitalizations, 221.000 daily hospitalizations, 1655 bone narrow transplantation have been accomplished at the Children’s Oncologic Hospital “Marianna V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA”.
At the same time and at the Center of Cellular and Gene Therapy of the Children’s Oncologic Hospital “Marianna V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA” 25 cellular therapies have taken place of which 2 have been realized to adults.
It is worth to mention the fact that, as of the year 2023, it is additionally implements at the Center of Cellular and Gene therapy, an innovative clinical research protocol for the treatment of relapses of the Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Within the scope of the clinical protocol , therapies with homemade CAR-T cells have already been performed to five children and a young adult with absolute success and achievement of healing.

The President of the Children’s Oncologic Hospital “Mariana V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA” Mr. Manolis Papasavvas declared that “Our primary concern is to win the children’s cancer.
