From the very first moment, the “ELPIDA” Association of Friends of Children with Cancer, following the initiative of its President, Mrs Marianna V. Vardinoyannis, came to support those who impacted by storm Ianos, which severely struck the Ionian Islands.
In order to meet the immediate needs of the citizens of Kefalonia, who suffered most of all, and especially the vulnerable population groups, Mrs Vardinoyannis directly contacted the competent agencies, in order to support them in those trying times.
Specifically, Mrs Vardinoyannis contacted the President of the Orphanage of Kefalonia Ms Vera Zervou-Anevlavi in Argostoli and the President of the ‘HYPERION’ Day Care Centre for People with Disabilities in Lixouri Ms Sophia Maropoulou-Zafiratou. These two important Foundations of the island, which have a long history and have offered so much to the island, were left without electricity.
Aid arrived immediately in the form of a generator sent to the ‘HYPERION’ Day Care Centre for People with Disabilities in Lixouri, which had been left without electricity, thus disrupting its operation. After the generator was sent, power was restored to the foundation, which can now operate normally.
Mrs Vardinoyannis contacted Mr Stavros Lykoudis, the engineer of the ‘Hyperion’ foundation. Mr Lykoudis described the difficult situation the foundation found itself in: “I will at least send you a generator, so you have power and I will be at your side for whatever else you may need”, said Mrs Vardinoyannis, who stressed that it was her obligation to help, and that she would be happy to visit and see the children smiling in person.
“We are moved. It was a surprise for us”, mentioned the President of the Foundation Ms Maropoulou-Zafiratou upon receiving the generator.
As regards the Kefalonia Orphanage ‘O Sotir’, all necessary actions were taken in order to send a generator there immediately, to meet the standing needs of the building.
“I am shocked Ms Zervou. I cannot control my sorrow and tears for everything that is happening. I will send you the generator you need immediately and I am here for you for anything else you might need”, said Mrs Vardinoyannis during her telephone conversation with the President of the Orphanage of Kefalonia Ms Vera Zervou.
On her side, Ms Zervou thanked Mrs Vardinoyannis, and said:
“We are a Foundation that does not receive state subsidies, we depend exclusively on donations, so it was a great relief for us. Mrs Vardinoyannis’ contribution, who is always at the children’s side, is well known. We needed this generator, because every time power was cut, the children were afraid, we couldn’t cook… And this time, we were left without electricity for 3 ½ days… That is why Mrs Vardinoyannis’ donation was one of the most important donations”.
