Distinguished Greek scientist and CEO of Pfizer Inc., Dr. Albert Bourla, visited the “Marianna V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA” Children’s Oncology Unit on Friday, 12 April 2019.
Mr. Bourla was greeted by the President of the “ELPIDA Association of Friends of Children with cancer,” Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis, and the Director of “Agia Sofia” and “P&A KYRIAKOU” Children’s Hospitals, Mr. Manolis Papasavvas.
Mrs. Vardinoyannis thanked Mr. Bourla for his visit to the Unit, stating: “I sincerely thank you for your support, as well as for your desire to visit our Hospital. To see our work up close and to support our young patients, their families, the doctors and nursing staff, and all of us who fight by their side. We feel great admiration for your wonderful work in the field of healthcare, and we are truly proud of the fact that a leading Greek scientist, such as yourself, holds a leading position in the global pharmaceutical industry. A fact that proves yet again that Greeks abroad do great things and fight for the good of humanity, in whatever corner of the world they may be.”
To to honour the top Greek scientist, Mrs. Vardinoyannis awarded him a plaque of the “ELPIDA” Association and, together, they subsequently placed a star bearing his name on the “ELPIDA” Wall of Stars.
Dr. Bourla thanked Mrs. Vardinoyannis, stressing the importance of the work of “ELPIDA” as well as her significant personal contribution to helping children who are faced with cancer.
Immediately afterwards, Dr. Bourla was given a tour of the Children’s Oncology Unit, was briefed in detail by doctors and nurses on the manner in which the Unit operates, and visited young patients.
Dr. Bourla is in Greece on the occasion of the Prix Galien, where he was awarded the “Distinguished Greek Leader” Award.
